frequently asked questions

Do I need my own horse?

No! No part of the club requires you to have your own horse.

WHere do lessons take place?

All lessons are held at Busby Equitation Centre. You can find travel information here.

How much do lessons cost?

Lessons cost £32, and are paid full at £320, paid on your first week of lessons.

How often are lessons?

Lessons are once a week, for the duration of the ten-week block you sign up for. We run 1 block per semester.

What level should I sign up for?

The lesson levels available can be found here . If you’re still not sure, there will be committee members at sign ups, send an email to gurc-horseriding@hotmail.com or send us a message on Facebook (Glasgow University Riding Club) or Instagram (@gusariding).

Can I ride more than once a week?

Sometimes we have free spaces in lessons after everybody has signed up for a slot, so you may then sign up for another time if you wish. If you are interested in a second lesson, send us an email after sign-ups are closed for the block. You can also arrange to ride in Busby’s regular lessons separately!

Do you offer hacking or rides out?

These can be arranged with the riding school if you are interested. However, they are weather and ability dependent.

Email gurc.events@gmail.com or message us on Facebook.

I haven’t ridden before. How can I start?

During Freshers’ Week we run a taster session, where you can come along to the stables. Here you can meet some of our favourite horses and ponies and give riding a try!

You can join the Club here, and read about lessons on offer here.

What should I wear?

Information about clothing and how to buy Club Kit can be found here.

How can I try out for a Team?

Information about Teams and how to try out can be found here. Team trials are run once a year in September to decide the teams for the academic year. If you have any additional questions, email the Teams Captain:

gurc-teams@hotmail.co.uk

What do i do if i am going to miss a lesson?

If it’s a planned absence (you know in advance that you will miss a lesson) you can tell Busby at your first lesson of the block. If you tell them you will miss a week of lessons, they can charge you for only the lessons they know you are going to. For example if you tell them you won’t be at the lesson in week three, instead of paying for 10 lessons that block you will pay for 9.

If it isn’t a planned absence (you are ill, you can’t get there), you need to email Busby as soon as you know you will not make your lesson. If you cancel with more than 24 hours notice, the cost of the lesson will be taken off of what you owe in the next block, for a maximum of 2 refunds per block. If you cancel on the day, you will not be refunded.

You also need to phone Busby to let them know if you are going to be late!

how do i join the club?

To join the riding club you need to buy a GUSA gym membership. You need to buy at least off-peak membership, not an off-peak membership.
