competing with gurc #blackandgold

GURC currently has 4 teams, all of which compete in the BUCS Equestrian leagues.

About the competitions

BUCS Equestrian competitions are aimed at assessing riders on their ability to get the best performance they can from an unknown horse. This means that nobody needs their own horse for the chance to compete!

The first round of competitions is known as the Mini-Leagues, and each of these are made up of 3 teams from different universities. Each team will host a home competition, providing 4 dressage horses, and 4 jumping horses. Teams are made up of 4 riders, who will each ride one dressage test and one jumping round on a horse they draw randomly. The rider’s goal is to achieve the best performance on their horse to get zero penalties. The riders and teams with the fewest penalties place highest. The team with the best performance in each league will qualify for the Regional finals, which offer the chance to compete at the National finals!

Trying Out

Team Trials are usually held the week after Freshers’ week, at our training yard. We look for riders that can do all the following:

  • show a good ability to adapt to, and are confident riding different horses

  • are neat, but effective riders

  • can jump round a course of fences at 90cm (3ft)

  • are able to complete a solid BD novice dressage test

  • have some competition experience (some exceptions may be made)

  • are committed to attending weekly training sessions

  • want to have fun!

Team Training

Teams need to be a member of UofG Sport, and the club, in order to train and compete. Instructions on how to do this are here.

Teams have a dedicated weekly training slot, which usually falls on a Monday or Tuesday evening. Training costs £/hour, but riders don’t need to pay any money to compete. Sessions alternate between dressage and jumping weeks on lots of different horses, to prepare for upcoming competitions.

If you are interested in trying out for our BUCS Teams, please fill out the form below detailing your riding experience or email:
